Christ in the Passover

What is Christ in the Passover?

Christ in the Passover is a Passover Seder Service with a dinner that usually takes about 3 hours to complete. It follows the traditional order of the Jewish Passover celebration but varies from the Jewish form in that it clearly shows how Jesus Christ fulfills it. We concur with the apostles that, “Christ our Passover Lamb also has been sacrificed” (1 Cor 5:7).

Why should we celebrate a Christ in the Passover?

First of all, this ancient tradition helps Christians to understand better the roots of their own faith. In Romans 11:17, it is written, “You, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them and became a partaker with them of the rich root of the olive tree.” Christians have been grafted into a rich spiritual history of which they often know very little. A Christ in the Passover Service and dinner helps them better to understand their own bountiful heritage.

Secondly, a Christ in the Passover Service presents the gospel clearly, and within its Jewish context. It is not uncommon for participants to testify that they finally understood the gospel through this special observance. And therefore it can be an excellent evangelistic opportunity for people who are seeking the truth. Jesus himself used a Passover Seder to explain his redemptive work and to introduce the Lords supper (cf. Luke 22:15-20).

How can we organize a Christ in the Passover?

My wife Ludmila and I organize and perform ‘Christ in the Passover’ dinner services during the months of March-May. We do it for smaller groups in homes as well as for churches in fellowship halls. We do not charge any fee, except an offering if the group/church is so inclined.

We generally use the following sequence:

  1. Greg introduces and teaches for about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
  2. We all eat dinner together for about 45 minutes.
  3. Greg teaches for another 45 minutes (during this session, Mila introduces the first century Jewish wedding practice).
